Biographical / Historical
Professor of Food Science and Dairy Chemistry in the New York State College of Agriculture at Cornell University. Born in Akron, Ohio, B.L. Herrington earned as Bachelor of Science degree at Montana State University in 1925, and a Ph.D. in Dairy Chemistry at Cornell in 1933. He had taken on a major teaching load in the Department of Dairy Industry and was offered a permanent position on graduation. He became Professor of Dairy Chemistry in 1936, and taught at Cornell until his retirement, except for the last three years of his career, when he taught chemistry in the Cornell program at the Philippine College of Agriculture at Los Banos. Even after retiring, he continued to teach, spending fifteen years instructing fifth grade students in remedial math in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. While at Cornell, Herrington was in charge of the course Food Science 1, the forerunner of the subsequent undergraduate program in Food Science. The course was first taught in 1946, mainly by Herrington himself, with occasional guest speakers. The lecture notes for it were typed in 1951.
