Annual Reports, 1933-1964
Scope and Contents
Bloomingdale’s annual reports summarize its activities during the past year. In their earlier form, the reports were printed and folded sheets that summarized Bloomingdale’s expenses and patient statistics. At some point between 1833 and 1842 the annual reports began to be published as staple-bound booklets authored by the physician (later the medical superintendent or medical director) and addressed to the Asylum Committee. These booklets contain narrative descriptions of Bloomingdale’s activities in addition to statistical summaries.
Annual reports concerning Bloomingdale can also be found in the annual reports of the New York Hospital which include a regular section covering Bloomingdale. From at least 1842 to 1932 the Bloomingdale reports appear to have been reproduced in their entirety in the reports of the New York Hospital. From 1933 to 1942 the Bloomingdale/Westchester reports were included in the reports of the New York Hospital but in truncated or summarized form. From 1943 onwards, the reports of Westchester Division were published separately and no longer included in the New York Hospital reports.
