Photo albums of Crips gang members

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: 8708

Content Description

Photo albums (plus 39 loose photos) containing over 250 photographs documenting the lives of three Crips gang members, Iceman, Laffdog, and Yoyo, in the period of the rise and eventual decline of gangsta rap, the 1980s-early 2000s. The first album and the loose photos (Iceman's) cover the mid- to late 1980s, and include many images from jail cells and yards, images of friends flashing gang signs or flying colors, and images of friends and family from the West Side neighborhoods of South Los Angeles covered by the turf of the Rollin' 30s Harlem Crips, the gang Iceman belonged to. Annotated in various graffiti styles. The second album (Laffdog's), circa 1993, reflects the growing influence of gangsta rap. It contains many references to Eazy-E, Snoop Dogg, NWA, and other hip-hop figures. Many pages in the album evoke gang life in the Original Front Hood Compton Crips. Includes a few pornographic images. The third album (YoYo's), from 2003, focuses on his wife and children, and includes many exhortations to rehabilitation after YoYo went to prison as a member of the Long Beach Crips. The album, which includes two funeral programs for young African American men, parallels the waning influence of gangsta rap in this period.

Biographical / Historical

The Rollin' 30s Harlem Crips were one of the largest, oldest, best organized, and most violent of the Los Angeles gangs. One of the gang's connections to gangsta rap was that Lord Ami (aka P-dOG), one of its members, was on the staff of Death Row Records. The Original Front Hood Compton Crips (OFHCC) were best known for their extensive drug operation.
