Scope and content

Photographs from productions of plays by the Department of Speech and Drama and, before that, the Department of Public Speaking. Most of the photographs are identified with the name of the play, and many are dated.

Biographical / Historical

The Department of Speech and Drama originated from the Department of Elocution and Oratory which formed around 1898. In 1914 the department changed its name to become the Department of Public Speaking, and in 1942 it became the Department of Speech and Drama. The department name changed again in 1967 to become the Department of Theatre Arts. Since 1996 its name has been the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance.
