Scope and content

In 1966-68, William Cutler, III (Ph.D. candidate in the history of education) interviewed nine people (13 interviews), including four members of the Board of Education, together with the dismissed superintendent and his successor were interviewed to no vote on the referendum and to consider possible relationships between these events. The interviews provide information for the study of interaction of major interest groups in the Ithaca area and the dynamics of the relationship between professionals and laymen in public education. There are also15 interviews with 14 people by Ardeth Deay (Ph.D. candidate in education, dissertation: "The Resolution of Intra-Role Conflicts Perceived by Role Enactors during the Transition from Hierarchical to Group Decisioni in Three School Settings," 1976) documenting the beginnings of alternative education in Ithaca with the founding of the East Hill School and the Markle Flats School.

Biographical / Historical

From 1956 to 1961, Ithaca School District voters rejected the appeal of the Board of Education for new school buildings and the Board dismissed the superintendent of schools who had advocated for the referendum. Two citizens' groups were involved in the referendum and dismissal, a taxpayers' association and a group organized to support education.
