Scope and content

3 volumes of manuscript and typewritten minutes of Library Council meetings, and minutes of meetings of the [Andrew Dickson] White Library Commission. The minutes were taken by University Librarian George W. Harris and his successor Willard Austen. A draft of the Library Council's charge appears at the beginning of the first volume. The last volume contains an index to the whole set. Topics covered in the minutes include specific books and serials to be purchased in response to faculty requests, allocation of funds, processing of student theses, purchases for the White Library, circulation policies, use of financial donations, creation of a reference library, creation of a library in Goldwin Smith Hall, the Tauchnitz Collection donated by Theodore Stanton (1915), library hours, creation of the Wason Collection (1918), and housing of the books for the New York State College of Agriculture (1919). Also included are the printed Cornell University Library General Rules for 1898, 1899, 1903, and 1906; lists of amounts appropriated for library purchases in different subjects for 1902-1903, 1907-1908, 1917-1918, and 1920-1929; rules for department libraries for 1916; and lists of the members of the Library Council and the White Library Commission.

Biographical / Historical

Created in 1883 by the Board of Trustees, Cornell University's Library Council consisted of the President of the Faculty (i.e. University), who served as ex-officio chair of the Council; the University Librarian; a member of the Board of Trustees; and four faculty members representing different subject areas. The Council was responsible for "the maintenance, regulation, and care of the University Library." The Council was to prepare lists of books recommended for purchase, as well as recommendations on all questions concerning their binding, cataloging, and other "accommodations." No purchases or other financial transactions could be made without the approval of the Board of Trustees.
