Two manuscript copies of a letter written on February 27, 1863, from Kents Corners, Vermont. Writing on behalf of herself and her husband Abram Holmes, Roxy Holmes describes the illnesses of two of her sons in the Union army. Her son George P. Holmes has camp dysentery, which she believes is due to conditions at Ship Island, Mississippi; her son Clark, stationed near Washington, D.C. with the 11th Vermont Regiment, has an illness affecting his kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs. She urges that they and a cousin, Ira, who is with George in Mississippi and also has dysentery, be transferred to the military hospital at Brattleboro, where the climate will be better and she will be able to attend to their needs. She urges the governor to allow her third son, Horace, who is wounded, to remain at the hospital, and she laments the death of 19-year-old Lyman of typhoid fever. The manuscript copies are written on stationery of the Office, Surgeon in Chief of Cavalry, Department of the Gulf, at New Orleans.
