Manuscript and printed legal documents and correspondence concerning the case as it came before the Oneida County (New York) Circuit Court, the Oneida County Supreme Court, and then before the Supreme Court for the Fifth Judicial District of the State of New York. Included are transcripts of Stephen Covell's testimony and letters among the attorneys involved in the case: C.W. White, the plaintiff's attorney, and Kernan, Quinn & Kernan, the defendant's attorneys.

Biographical / Historical
Stephen A. Covell alleged that he was charged a penalty for boarding the train from Utica to Rome, New York without a ticket, but that the ticket office at the Utica station was closed in the hours preceding his trip, so he could not have bought a ticket. He sued the New York Central Railroad Company to recover the cost of the penalty he paid.
