Biographical / Historical

The Black River & Utica Rail Road Company had taken out a mortgage on land owned by Charles P. Kirkland and Samuel Beardsley, but the plaintiffs alleged that the company failed to keep up with payments on the mortgage, so they sued the company, officers of the Ontario Bank, and other associated persons. One of the issues in the case was whether the railroad company's locomotives and railroad cars were included in the mortgage or not.
