Biographical / Historical
F. Louis Faass (of Utica, New York) and Daniel Ford (of the village of Mohawk, New York) were contractors hired by the State of New York to lengthen the foot of Lock No. 46 on the Erie Canal, at Utica. They began the work, but shortly afterwards the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company filed an injunction to stop them from removing the railroad bridge over the canal, which they would have to remove in order to proceed. The state subsequently contracted with someone else to lengthen the lock at the head, which would not require removing the bridge. Faass and Ford filed a claim to cover the expense of the work they did and the profits they would have made if they could have finished the job.
