Biographical / Historical
Amana colonies are seven villages located in Iowa County, east-central Iowa. Most people are descended from members of the Community of True Inspiration: Ebenezerites, who immigrated from Germany to West Seneca, Erie County, New York in the 1840s. Gradually, more Ebenezer villages were laid out, mainly in New York State (Weste Seneca) and two villages in Canada (Canada Ebenezer and Kenneberg). In the 1860s, the community moved to Iowa, where the Ebenezer Society was first renamed "Bleibe Treu" and later to Amana. They lived a communal life until 1932. Frank A. Slade, the editor of the brief history of the Community of True Inspiration, was Supervisor of West Seneca, New York.
