Scope and content

Approximately 50 items including Indentures, receipts, letters, a school attendance register, and a membership badge, from various places in New York State. Letters include a circular signed by William Randolph Hearst, eliciting support for his candidacy for Governor (dated 1906), and two letters on House of Representatives letterhead, from Congressman J. W. Dwight to John Kelly, concerning how to obtain an appointment to a position (1880). Indentures include a document selling land in Seneca County in payment of the debts of the late David Atwater of the town of Ulysses, now in Tompkins County (1804); and two documents selling land in the town of Beekman in Dutchess County to Olive Crandall (1809 and 1820). Other documents include liquor licenses for Benjamin H. Burdick of Lincklain (1828 and 1832); a bond promising payment of $1500 from J. Egbert Lovell of Cincinnatus, Cortland County, to Lucius Bowen (1852); and four notes attesting that various people are church members in good standing (1859-1861). The school attendance register was kept by various teachers, who signed the affidavits on the last page before being paid (1864-1865).

Scope and content

Also included are a printed pamphlet containing the bylaws and rules of order of Auburn Tent No. 27, International Order of Rechabites (Auburn, 1873); another pamphlet containing the constitution and bylaws of the Cascadilla Division, No. 97, of the Sons of Temperance of New York (Ithaca, 1847); a badge for a member of Trumansburg Tent No. 311, Knights of the Maccabees (undated); four receipts for payments to lumber manufacturer and dealer George Small in Ithaca, Tompkins County (1888-1899); coupons for a special tax paid by tobacco dealer Henry L. Learn of North Lansing, Tompkins County (1890-1891); and receipts to various businesses for lodging, horses, riding tack, and newspaper subscriptions (circa 1845-1887). Also included is a receipt from the warden of the state prison at Auburn for the delivery of two convicts by the sheriff of Tompkins County (1858). The convicts are Leroy Worden and Daniel Barber.
