Scope and content

Collection consists mainly of portraits of scientists and historians of science. Individuals pictured include George Sarton, H.H. Boysen, Howard B. Adelmann, Justus Liebig, Jean Sylvain Bailly, Isaac Barrow, Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, André-Marie Ampère, Charles Darwin, Thomas Huxley, and others. One of the portraits of Lavoisier includes a chilling depiction of Jacobins confiscating his possessions during the Reign of Terror. Also, title page proof of "De Re Anatomica", by Realdo Colombo, from original woodcut block (2 copies).

Scope and content

Also, a facsimile of "The largest white-bill wood pecker and the willow oak", by Mark Catesby. "A keepsake ... to mark the four-volume publication of Catesby's Natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. The 265 original watercolour drawings of 1722-26, in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, now for the first time published in facsimile with a precise resetting of the original English text"--Caption. Enclosed with the print are four sample pages of text, and a leaflet on the planned facsimile.
