Letter written from Fort Belkamo, Texas. Describes crimes committed by Wichita, Waco, and Keechi Indians against residents of Texas, including horse theft. Discusses meeting with Chief Kowaaka [sic] and Major H. H. Sibley to discuss theft. It goes on to describe the imprisonment of the Indians and then their escape, in which the Chief lost his life after killing one of the guards. The Chief also killed his wife and child. Mentions talks with a Comanche Chief Gatumsie [sic] and War Chief Aquaquosh [sic]. Letter is incomplete and therefore unsigned. Letter is accompanied by explanatory note by Alanson B. Skinner. The explanatory note attempts to guess at who the writer of the letter was. It cites a report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs for 1853 that lists R. S. Neighbors as a special agent to the Indians in Texas. The note rules out Neighbors as the author and instead suggests that one of his subordinates, likely Jesse Stern, wrote the letter.
