Scope and content
Two scrapbooks of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and printed ephemera relating to Edith A. Ellis' activities in the Democratic State Committee, the Democratic Union, New York Federation of Women's Clubs, and other organizations. Included are letters from Nancy Cook, James A. Farley, Helen Keller, Herbert Lehman, Caroline O’Day, Eleanor Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and other members and affiliates of the Democratic Party.
Newspaper clippings are primarily articles from The Ithaca Journal, those written by or mentioning Ellis are often annotated as such in Ellis’ hand. Articles are about local political events and charities, work of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and initiatives of other local women’s organizations. Many clippings, as well as letters from Robert E. Tremen, pertain to the efforts of the Ithaca Community Chest Campaign, of which Ellis was a regular participant.
Printed ephemera include organizational membership cards; event invitations; and programs relating to the Democratic Party, women’s organizations, and Alumni organizations of Ithaca High school and Cornell University.
Personal and form letters from Nancy Cook, Caroline O’Day, James A. Farley, and Eleanor Roosevelt primarily regard the affairs of the Women’s Activities Committee of the Democratic State Committee and often express gratitude for Ellis’ continued work and contributions to the organization. Personal and form letters from Franklin D. Roosevelt express appreciation for Ellis’ support in his New York Gubernatorial and United States Presidential campaigns.
Letters (likely form letters) from Helen Keller thank recipients for their contributions to the American Foundation for the Blind, discuss “how important trained hands are to the blind”, and honor Keller’s late teacher, Anne Sullivan Macy.
Of note are invitations to the New York state Gubernatorial inauguration ceremonies of Alfred E. Smith, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Herbert H. Lehman and a December 1932 letter from President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt thanking Ellis for her husband for their “enthusiastic message of good will” regarding the 1932 Presidential Election. Also of note is a June 1929 letter from American prohibition repeal leader Pauline Sabin, inviting Ellis to join the Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Reform (WONPR).
