Scope and Contents

Scrapbook of Adeline Carrie Kiep, Cornell University Class of 1905, documenting her academic and social life on campus. Materials date from 1897-1906. Includes event programs, coursework materials, correspondence, photographs, news clippings, and additional ephemera. Scrapbook also documents Kiep’s participation in and interaction with various student organizations, including the Christian Association of Cornell University, Delta Kappa Theta, Kappa Nu, Kappa Alpha Theta (of which Kiep was a member), Sage Dramatic Club, the Medical Society, and the “Les Cabotins” theater group (of which Kiep was a member, serving as a “scene-shifter”).

Present in the scrapbook are programs for performances and other events at Cornell, including performances of “The Freshman Stunt” (1901-1904); “The Sophomore Stunt”; “The Man in the Case” (1902); the Freshman Banquet (1904); the Regatta Concert and Navy Ball (May 29, 1902); multiple Cornell Masque performances (1903-1905); Concerts of the Glee, Banjo, and Mandolin Clubs (1903-1904); Sage Chapel Organ Recitals (1902-1905); the Senior Play (1904); “Orpheus and Eurydice, as Introduced by the Class of 1905”; “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”; the Junior Week Ice Carnival at Beebe Lake (February 6, 1905); the Ninth Annual Pennsylvania-Cornell Debate (March 10, 1905); Les Cabotins program (March 17, 1905, for a Moliere play), and Class Day (June 22, 1905). There are also several programs and ticket stubs for performances at the Lyceum Theatre in Ithaca.

Material related to Kiep’s academic career at Cornell includes essay and exam questions for German, French, Psychology, History, Philosophy of Education, and Modern Philanthropy courses. Also present are a copy of the Cornell Student Handbook from 1901; checkout receipts from the Cornell University Library; class election ballots (1905-1907); class chants or songs (1903-1907); the Schedule of Examinations for 1902-1903; course schedules for German (1902-1904); Kiep’s registration for the Arts course for the academic year 1903-1904; the program for the Baccalaureate Services (June 18, 1905); and a copy of the President’s Report for 1902-1903 by then-Cornell President Jacob Gould Schurman.

Photographs in the scrapbook are of Kiep, friends, and sorority sisters, including some of Kiep and sorority sisters performing in a play in celebration of Washington’s Birthday. News clippings focus on campus life and athletics, including a clash between freshman and sophomore Cornell women; Spring Day (May 18, 1905); the Princeton-Cornell football game (October 29, 1904); the men’s rowing team; basketball; the Memorial Day Regatta baseball game between Cornell, Harvard, and the University of Pennsylvania (1903); and a Women’s Fencing Exhibition (April 24, 1902).

Correspondence present concerns Kiep’s social life and includes letters to Kiep from friends and members of other fraternities and sororities, in addition to invitations to social events. Also present are congratulatory telegrams to Kiep upon her graduation (1905). Additional ephemera present in the scrapbook includes calling cards; Valentine’s cards; train tickets; a humorous booklet titled “Animated Alphabet”; and a handwritten poem.
