Subseries contains articles and issues of popular periodicals of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries featuring articles about the development of the telegraph and notable events in telegraph history. Periodicals represented in this subseries include Harper’s Weekly, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, The Illustrated London News, New York Herald, and others. The majority of the articles and periodicals in this subseries are about the various attempts at laying an operational transatlantic cable between 1852 and 1884. Also present are issues of Scientific American containing articles on the telegraph, radio, and their applications (1858-1913); two Spiritualist newspapers documenting the role of the telegraph in attempted communications with the dead (1857-1858); and commemorative issues of Harper’s Weekly honoring Samuel F. B. Morse (1866, 1872).
