Series contains works of art, sheet music, periodicals, and additional ephemera documenting the impact of the telegraph on popular culture from the mid-nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries in the United States and Europe. Works of art include illustrations published in magazines, as well as lithograph and an illustration created for the title page of a book on the telegraph. Sheet music present includes songs written about or mentioning the telegraph, indicative of the invention’s cultural impact. Ephemera present include stamps, posters, and theater programs. Articles cover the development of telegraph technology, especially the transatlantic cable, and are published in popular nineteenth-century periodicals including Harper’s Weekly, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, and Scientific American.
