Scope and Contents
Subseries contains artistic depictions of telegraph equipment, infrastructure, and operators. Formats represented include engravings, woodcuts, and lithographs. Notable items include a cover page illustration for Book of the Telegraph (1851); two lithographs by William Heine depicting Commodore Matthew Perry’s expedition to Japan and gifting of telegraph equipment to Japanese representatives; cover illustrations for Indicateur des Telegraphes, a French telegraph manual (1901); and two illustrations, one framed, of the SS Great Eastern, the ship that laid the transatlantic cable between 1865-1866.
