Scope and content

Letter from a young man in Spencer, New York, to his parents in Greenwich, Massachusetts, addressed to Solomon Howe, evidently his father. The son describes his family's financial and livestock farming difficulties, but encourages his brothers and sisters to join him in the Spencer area, calling it "a good place for poor people and no worse for rich ones."

Dates: 1808 August 15.

Scope and content

Diaries describe in subjective detail his experiences in the 76th Regiment, New York Volunteers, and the 17th New York Cavalry during the Civil War, when stationed at Camp Rathbone, Albany, New York, and elsewhere. Later diaries describe the hardships of a farmer and logger on Class 1 land in Tioga County. Also, volumes of biblical texts, spelling words, and an account book.
