Scope and Contents
Arthur G. Bedeian’s Academy of Management (AoM) Records document Arthur G. Bedeian’s long standing involvement in the administrative and scholarly activities of the Academy of Management. Materials, spanning from 1854 to 2025, include AoM publications, correspondence, administrative and organizational files, audiovisual recordings, memorabilia, photographs, digital files, and research documentation created or collected by Bedeian in his roles as editor, active member, Fellow, and historian of the Academy. The collection contains newsletters of the AoM and the Management History Division, along with related correspondence and other documentation; publications about the history of the Academy; portraits of AoM presidents and other significant management scholars, conference announcements, programs, procedures, and annual meeting proceedings with related correspondence; membership directories; and handbooks. Documentation of the AoM Fellow Group governance includes nomination processes, memorial and tribute material, financial records, membership directories, correspondence, and constitutional amendments. Research files sent to Arthur Bedeian by Charles D. Wrege, the management historian and professor emeritus of business management at Rutgers University, include Wrege’s writings and additional research on Frederick W. Taylor, the Hawthorne Studies, early systems analysis, and industrial and transportation history, as well as correspondence between the two scholars. Of visual and research interest are the envelopes decorated by Wrege with drawings, collages, and handwritten commentary, as well as biographical material related to him and his wife, B. Marion Wrege. Additional materials include correspondence on awards, committees, and organizational planning; memorabilia from annual meetings; and VHS recordings of a 1985 doctoral consortium. The collection has seven Series.

Biographical / Historical
Arthur G. Bedeian (born December 22, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa) is an American management scholar and Emeritus Professor of Management at Louisiana State University (LSU). In 1967, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Iowa; a year later, an M.B.A. from the University of Memphis; and, in 1973, a Doctor of Business Administration from Mississippi State University. Bedeian began his academic career at Auburn University before joining Louisiana State University in 1985, where he was named the Ralph and Kacoo Olinde Distinguished Professor of Management and, in 1996, earned the title of Boyd Professor, the highest professional recognition that can be awarded to an LSU faculty member. Bedeian served as President of the Southern Management Association from 1982 to 1983 and, in 1989, became the 44th President of the Academy of Management. Through his scholarship and service, he earned major LSU honors, including the Distinguished Faculty Award and the Distinguished Research Master Award. The Academy of Management recognized him with the Distinguished Service Award and multiple lifetime achievement distinctions. He was elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Association for Psychological Science. He also became a Fellow of the Southern Management Association and the Academy of American Management. He is the author and co author of 12 books and 300 articles and essays on the evolution of management thinking. He is the co author, along with Daniel A. Wren, of The Evolution of Management Thought, a foundational text in management history. Bedeian’s research contributions span organizational behavior, management history, and scholarly communication. He retired from Louisiana State University in 2015.

Records from 1854 to 2025 include AoM and Management History Division publications on sharing news and documenting the history of the field; extensive annual meeting administrative files and related correspondence; proceedings, directories, and membership-related files; Fellows Group processes and governance; research files on management history collected and created by Charles D. Wrege; correspondence and administrative files; memorabilia; and audiovisual and digital material.
