Scope and Contents

Manchester, New Hampshire. Gelatin silver print, ca. 1967; original photo ca. 1870-1875. Image depicts part of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in Manchester, N.H. from a high vantage point. On the left is a series of buildings, separated from the lumber yard by a canal; in the center is the lumber yard; on the right is another canal; on the far left is the Merrimack River. See opp. p. 312 in John Clarke's "Manchester. A Brief Record of Its Past and a Picture of Its Present," (1875) for a lithograph illustration of what appears to be this view, described as "Mechanics Row & Lumber Yard." Original photograph at the Smithsonian Institution (Division of Mechanical & Civil Engineering).
