Content Description

Pluto Press gender and sexuality collection consists of 30 files with writings of specialists in gender and sexology, dating from 1982 to 2011. Authors include Judith Rowland, Emmanuel Reynaud, and Bill Marshall. Issues examined include sexual assault and abuse, homosexuality, and sexual identity. Files contain correspondence between author and publisher, often commencing with a proposal from the author. Roger van Zwanenberg (RvZ), managing director and owner of Pluto Press, and Anne Beech (AB, or Beech), editorial and subsequently managing director, of Pluto Press, feature prominently in the correspondence. The files may also include copies of the original, signed and dated agreement to publish contract. Other items in a publisher’s file may include in-house title proposal documents, with details on in-house meetings on the author and title, financial projections on a title, and discussions with cover designers, printers and newspaper and magazine clippings, press releases and more.

Pluto Press is a London-based radical political, independent publishing house founded in 1969 by Richard Kuper. It is one of Britain’s oldest radical publishers, critically engaging with the traditions of Marxism, anarchism, and feminism. Founded in 1969 by Richard Kuper, Pluto published works by Karl Marx, Frantz Fanon and Noam Chomsky, and is well-known for the striking covers designed by David Pearson. In 1986 Dr Roger van Zwanenberg bought Pluto Press and ran it until his retirement in 2011.
