Oral history interview conducted by Robin Dennis with Eleanor Norton York as part of an Ithaca High School assignment. Topics discussed include Vetsburg for soliders coming to Cornell University on the G.I. Bill York’s childhood; her education in Ithaca and the development of elementary and high schools in the Ithaca area; her occupations including working at Girl Scout camp Comstock, working at the YMCA, teaching; religion in Ithaca, Ithaca community and race, town and gown relations between Ithaca and Cornell University and politics and voting in Ithaca; transportation including the octopus railroads and train trips, the Station Resteraunt, trucks losing brakes on State street, traffic amd roads including Route 13, Hangar theater airport; Korean and Vietnam Wars, fear of nuclear war, draft registration; Women's Movements and Women's Rights, conditions for girls in school in Ithaca.

Biographical / Historical

Eleanor Norton York graduated from Cornell University in 1975 and would then work for Cornell starting in 1980. She served as executive staff assistant at the Center for Radiophysics and Space Research. She became a member of the research group led by Carl Sagan in 1984.
