Evolving from ska and rocksteady and influenced by traditional Jamaican mento as well as American jazz and R & B, reggae emerged as its own distinct genre in the 1960s. In addition to the musical influence, the international popularity and spread of reggae music throughout the 1970s and 1980s also increased the visibility of Rastafari and helped globalize its teachings and tenets.
