Mexico City punk zines and books

 Collection
Identifier: 8142

Content Description

Collection of zines and books from the Punk, Goth, Metal, and Emo scenes that emerged in Mexico City’s Tianguis Cultural del Chopo, a flea market near Mexico City’s downtown that became a counter-cultural hub and marketplace, and, more prominently, a home for punk youth. Spanning two decades, the materials include a large selection of zines, ten of which are issues from the fanzine “Banda Rockera.” Some of these publications are notably radical in their politics: namely, an anarchism influenced by the Mexican radical tradition. For example, the magazine “Ahuizote” features a rock musician posed on the cover next to Emiliano Zapata. The books in this collection, rare publications themselves, include four historical-sociological studies of the scene, one small photo-book in an accordion fold, a book of poetry by José Francisco Zapata (founder of the Chopo literary workshop), and a synopsis of Cauhtémoc’s Codex, which further documents the scene by carving a resonant historical source.
