Content Description

Roughly six hundred photographs provide evidence of building and interior types from around the United States. The majority of the collection is Real Photograph Postcards (RPPC), many of which have written messages and postmarks that help identify place and time and cultural history. The photographs are organized by type of residence.

Biographical / Historical

Emeriti Professors Jan Jennings and Herbert Gottfried donated the photograph collection. Jennings worked in the Department of Design and Environmental Analysis from 1993 to 2012. Her research areas include the history, theory and criticism of historical and contemporary interior design; exhibition design and architectural installation design; and material culture studies. Gottfried, an art and architectural historian, was a professor in the Landscape Architecture Department from 1993 to 2006 where he served as chair of the department for six years. His research area at Cornell was the American cultural landscape. Their research resulted in the publishing of three books on American vernacular buildings and interiors.
