Biographical / Historical

Alice M. (Carpenter) Scott (1855-1903) of Lathrop, MO was born into slavery in Clinton County, MO on January 21, 1855 and emancipated in 1865. As a free adult, she made a career of lecturing and fundraising on behalf of the American Baptist Home Missionary Society. She became ill and died on May 9, 1903 at the age of 48 after arriving in Detroit for a lecture series. Her Detroit Free Press obituary (10 May 1903) noted that "she has often been compared to Booker T. Washington and was one of the leaders of her race in this country."
