Content Description
A collection of 261 contemporary newspaper issues and articles from around the United States regarding the 1963 March on Washington for Civil Rights and the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign. The collection includes both complete newspapers featuring front-page news coverage of the events but also scores of "minor" articles, columns, and editorials located in the back pages which record events that transpired before, during, and after the marches. The news archive was assembled to document the political and social conditions surrounding these major events, offering a picture of racial conditions across the United States during the 60s. Cities represented in the collection include San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, New Orleans, Boston, Detroit, St. Louis, New York, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C.

Biographical / Historical
At the time of the 1963 March on Washington, Louis Ryan (1913-2011) was a Dominican priest; he separated from the Order in 1965, married in 1972, and together with his wife established L.J. Ryan Books of Columbus, Ohio. As a participant in the 1963 March, Ryan undertook an in-depth study of the events before, during, and after the March on Washington. In the process of advancing his research, he assembled this extensive collection of contemporary newspaper accounts.
