Biographical / Historical

The Congress of African Peoples was a Black Power organization formed in 1970 under the leadership of Amiri Baraka. It contributed significantly to the black liberation movement throughout the 1970s as a leading organization in the National Black Political Convention, the National Black Assembly, African Liberation Day, the African Liberation Support Committee, and the Black Women's United Front. Its first convention, held in Atlanta (September 3-7, 1970), drew participants and organizers from across the Americas, Africa, and the Caribbean. Speakers included Amiri Baraka, John Henrik Clarke, Len Chandler, Roosevelt Douglas, Jesse Jackson, Cecil Braithwaite, Whitney Young, Louis Farrakhan, Stokely Carmichael, Roy Innis, Corky Gonzalez, John Lewis, Julian Bond, and others. Performers included the Impressions, the Last Poets, Sonia Sanchez, Jerry Butler, and Stevie Wonder.
