Cheyenne primacy article and maps

 Collection — Folder: 82
Identifier: 9264

Content Description

Reprint of the article "Cheyenne primacy: new perspectives on a Great Plains tribe" by Margot Liberty and W. Raymond Wood (from Plains Anthropologist, volume 56, number 218, 2011), together with reprints of seven maps of the Battle of the Little Bighorn (June 25-26, 1876) and the wider Indian Wars of 1876. In support of Margot Liberty's article, the maps--drawn between 1927 and 1932--suggest that the Northern Cheyennes, not the bands of Lakota Sioux generally credited, played the leading role in the battles of 1876. The maps and article also describe the complex politics involved in organizing the enormous Indian camp on the Little Bighorn River. Originally drawn by Thomas B. Marquis, a respected scholar whose research forms the basis of Liberty's article, the maps were archived at Little Bighorn National Battlefield (Hardin, Montana) for many years in obscurity. In addition to the article and maps, collection includes a summary page with miniature images of the maps, and a typewritten press release.
