Biographical / Historical

Photographer Mary Steen (1856–1939), the first woman in Denmark to be named court photographer; she also was a prominent feminist, an advocate for women workers and a promoter of photography as a women’s profession.

Biographical / Historical

Prince Waldemar of Denmark (1858–1939) and his nephew and special friend Prince George of Greece (1869–1957) were allegedly a long-term homosexual couple who married women in keeping with convention but whose primary devotion was to each other. Prince George's spouse was Princess Marie Bonaparte (1882–1962), a great-grandniece of Napoleon and a leading psychoanalyst who popularized Freudian thought in France. In her private writings, she made it clear that she came to understand and accept her husband's orientation.
