Content Description

Collection includes a letter and envelope from John F. Kennedy to Rossiter dated November 18th, 1963 commenting on Rossiter's book The American Presidency. Kennedy makes note of the foreword in the book which quotes Shakespeare and offers an alternate Shakespeare quote. Also included is a letter to Rossiter from journalist Hugh Sidey dated November 30, 1963, describing the circumstances of the Kennedy letter and how it was Sidey's last contact with the President before his death. Also a recording of the JFK memorial service held November 23, 1963 in Barton Hall at Cornell University in which Rossiter cites the Kennedy letter while giving the eulogy.

Biographical / Historical

Clinton Rossiter was a member of the Cornell University Class of 1939. He was an American historian, political scientist, and professor at Cornell University. He served as the chair of the Government Department from 1956 to 1959. He worked at Cornell from 1946 until his death in 1970. He authored the American Presidency among 20 other books and won both the Bancroft Prize and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award for his book Seedtime of the Republic.
