Reports discuss the year Alice H. Cook spent on a Fulbright grant at the Institute of Labor Management Studies at Keio University, Tokyo; her research and teaching there; her impressions of Japan and the Japanese; and life and the labor movement in Okinawa, Taiwan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Korea, which she also visited. Also, two tape recordings made by Cook during the 1968 Democratic National Convention discussing the atmosphere and conditions at the convention and the peace demonstration in Chicago. Also included are a tape and transcript of a lecture entitled "The Role of the Ombudsman" in which she discusses the function and authority of her office, which include hearing and investigating the unresolved grievances of the university community and operating a university information center and rumor clinic. She describes the way her office functions as an independent agency using the pressure of public opinion and her free access to university records to effect change. Cook concludes by relating a few examples of cases dealt with during her first two months in office. A question and answer period follows.
