Biographical / Historical
Fred McLafferty served as the Peter J.W. Debye Professor in Chemistry at Cornell University. He is known for the McLafferty rearrangement reaction and his work in mass spectrometry. He received his B.S. degree in 1943 and M.S. in 1944 both at the University of Nebraska. In 1950 he received his Ph.D. from Cornell University under William Miller. After a period of time with Dow chemical and as a professor Purdue University he returned to Cornell in 1968. He is a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences and has won numerous awards in recognition of his work.
