Collection consists of letters Ashby wrote to his family while at college. They chronicle his daily life at Cornell, including his classes, current events, friends, Ithaca weather, professors, exams, etc.

Biographical / Historical

Chester Ashby graduated from Cornell University in 1901 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1945 Ashby retired from the machine drawing room in the engineering department of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. after 44 years of service. He was a former commander and adjutant of the Spanish-American War Veterans and a member of the official board of trustees of Grace Methodist Church. He also served on the board of directors of the Young Men's Christian Association in Newport News. He helped form the Retired Men's Club, of which he was a member and president. Ashby died on September 5, 1955.
