Scope and content

Collection documents Nelson's time in Peru as part of the Cornell Peru Project in Vicos, Peru during 1961. Material includes slides, photographs, Nelson's typed field notes and paper submitted for the Field Studies Program. In addition to Vicos and the neighboring community of Recuayhuanca, locations in photographs include Machu Picchu, Cuzco, Pachacamac, Chavin de Huantar and Puerto Maldonado. Images show potato sorting, coca use, wool dying, and other aspects of living and working with the Vicosinos. Photos of a Vicos wedding celebration is also included. Field notes document observations of activities and also include transcripts of interviews with the Vicosinos including children. A paper titled Secondary Education for Students of Vicos by Nelson is also included. Also a pamphlet about the program and Nelson's World Health Organization vaccination certificates booklet.

Biographical / Historical

Steven R. Nelson was one of six students chosen to live in Vicos in 1961 through the Columbia-Cornell-Harvard Summer Field Studies Program, in conjunction with the Cornell-Peru Project. The subject of his work in Vicos was "Secondary Education for the Students of Vicos" in particular the integration of the colegio in the nearby mestizo town of Carhuaz by the first indigenous Vicosino student to attend that secondary school. Nelson received a B.A. from Cornell in 1962.
