Scope and content
Diary sporadically kept by Edna Lucille Stein, née Smith when she was a student at Cornell University in 1927. The diary describes student activities such as coursework, exams, professors, social events including dinners and shows, and sorority life. Smith discusses her desire to fall in love, contemplates her future, and reflects on life as an eighteen year old, also some mention of being a Jewish student. Outside of life on campus, the diary covers her travel back home during breaks. There is much discussion about Smith's two roommates and sisters in the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, Ethel Lee Libson, married name Clevans and Eleanor Lowenstein, married name Goldwater. She mentions activities and conversations she has with them including discussing classes, sorority life, and literature such as Women in Love by D. H. Lawrence. Smith discusses her thoughts on a speculative romantic relationship between Lowenstein and Libson and wonders what she should say. She discusses her disapproval of the relationship, while also wondering if her own feelings are correct. There is mention of a Cornell student who drowned in the gorge. The diary mentions encounters with other Cornell personalities including Hu Shih, Morris Bishop, and Frederick Marcham.
