Biographical / Historical
Professor emeritus in the Division of Nutritional Sciences (1999-2006), Cornell University. Pelto received a BA in sociology (1963), MA (1967) and PhD (1970) in anthropology from the University of Minnesota. Her work bridges the interface between academic research and actions to improve nutrition and public health in communities, with an emphasis on infant and young child nutrition.
Biographical / Historical
Pelto began her teaching career in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Connecticut, doing field research in Mexico and Latin America and Finland, with support from a Fulbright grant. She served for eight years as a senior social scientist at the World Health Organization, responsible for creating research tools and implementing their application to improve household management of acute respiratory infection and diarrheal diseases in developing countries.
