Scope and content

Scrapbook containing items documenting Thaler's student life at Cornell University with some items from before and after his time as a student there. Scrapbook contains ephemera and photographs relating to Brooklyn Boys High School, Ithaca Hebrew Sunday School, Cornell Dramatic Club, football, crew, Cornell Cosmopolitan Club Philippine Night, Spring Day 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925 (including photo of Thaler with future wife Rachel who was a student at Ithaca Conservatory of Music, Class of 1923 Junior Smoker 1922, Class of 1925 Sophomore Smoker 1923, Lehigh Valley Railroad, Lyceum theater including program for Madam Butterfly, Cornell Law School and others. Additional items include draft of letter requesting information about Cornell, room lease, letter of welcome from Ithaca Board of Commerce, piece of a toboggan with note indicating first toboggan ride presumably from the campus toboggan slide, tin can key, Cornell Reserve Officers Training Corps Sergeant certificate, Class of 1925 tobacco pouch, Cornel Official Examination Book (Blue Book), Lackawanna Railroad Spring Recess New Jersey Special train menu, note regarding an auction at ex-mayor Stewart's home, flyer regarding behavior of fans at athletic events, Manuscript Club program for Ulysses of Ithaka. Also clippings documenting activities of the time including President Livingston Farrand's inauguration and Willard Straight Hall dedication. Menus from Ithaca include the Goodie Shop, Cornell Confectionary (Floros Candy Company), Pop's Place, Dinty Moore's Lunch, Wisteria Garden, Puritan Shop, The Coffee Shoppe on Tioga Street, also K. & B. Restaurant in Geneva, Busy Bee and Imperial Coffee Shoppe, Lakeside Inn and Riverside Park Pavilion in Auburn. Photographs of freshmen in beanies, Class of 1925 prank adding class numbers to façade of Goldwin Smith Hall, Bertram Fragner naked holding paddle being initiated into D.S Spring Day, frosh mud rush, dorm room, campus, waterfalls, and individuals. New York City material relating to the Hippodrome, menus from Imperial Tea Garden restaurant in Brooklyn and menu for Childs. Materials relating to Omicron Alpha Tau fraternity including dance cards, photographs of the fraternity house at 115 Ridgewood Road, and notes regarding initiation hazing. Items from Monticello, New York, including Amusement Park and photographs of a fire. Items from a trip to New York City with images of Thaler's father and likely other family, some at the Statue of Liberty, program for the Newland Club dance at the Hotel Martinique.

Biographical / Historical

Louis K. Thaler graduated Cornell University with an A.B. in 1925 and an LL.B in 1927. He was admitted to the N.Y. Bar in 1927, and has practiced law in Ithaca, NY continuously from 1927. He was the Sr. partner at Thaler & Thaler. He was an constant lecturer at Cornell Law School from 1928 to 1930 and served as City Attorney for the city of Ithaca from 1940-1941. From 1945 to 1962 he was Special County Judge and Surrogate. Thaler was a member of the American Bar Association, the N.Y. State Bar Association & The Tompkins County Bar Association. He was president of the Tompkins County Bar Association 1944-1945. He was also a member of the American College of Probate Counsel and the Association of Insurance Attorneys.
