The preface says that the volume represents the results of one scholastic year's work performed during the second term of Tuvin's sophomore year and the second term of his junior year. The work represented includes instruction from Professor George B. Upton, Professor Herman Diederichs. All the instructors and his fellow lab partners are listed in the book. The book covers a range of metallurgical subjects and equipment like furnaces. It also includes notes on lectures.
