Biographical / Historical

Richard Hugo Gallagher was a pioneer of the finite-element method (FEM) in industry, who later had a distinguished career as dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Arizona, provost of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, and president of Clarkson University. He worked at Cornell University from 1967-1978 where he served as professor of civil engineering and was later appointed chairman of the Department of Structural Engineering. He was also founder and editor of the International Journal of Numerical Methods in Engineering.
