Biographical / Historical

On March 31, 1986, in a protest calling for the University of California to divest from South Africa because of apartheid, about 1,000 protesters built shanties to block the entrance to California Hall, home of the chancellor's office at the Berkeley campus. The next day, 61 protesters were arrested and the shanties were destroyed; but within a few days, protesters rebuilt the shanties. In the ensuing struggle between protesters and police, ultimately 91 people were arrested, and 29 received minor injuries.
