Martin Filler Collection of United States Presidential Postcards

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: 8601

Scope and content

The collection consists primarily of postcards from the late nineteenth century through the early 21st century and featuring images of American presidents and their families. There are also examples of postcards featuring the vacation residences of presidents, wives/widows of presidents, and those featuring specific rooms of the White House or other residential spaces. Some cards were printed in celebration/promotion a president's visit abroad; in some cases these examples were printed in the country visited. Other cards were created for use as campaign material. The collection includes 709 items total. Exceptions to the postcard format are a few late nineteenth-century trade cards and a Thomas E. Dewey pamphlet.
