Scope and content
Two scrapbooks of photographs, postcards, and ephemera documenting the travels of three women friends in and around the Great Lakes region, through New York State, and into Canada. The albums contain of 150 black and white silver gelatin photographs and approximately 100 pieces of clipped ephemera. Volume 1 documents two trips, beginning on August 17, 1925, the first one by steamship in and around the Great Lakes, the second one to Watkins Glen, New York. Places visited include Buffalo, Detroit, Mackinac Island (Michigan), the Quincy Mines (Hancock, Michigan), Duluth (Minnesota), and (on the second trip) Watkins Glen State Park. The women travelers in the photographs are dressed in contemporary 1920s fashion, with plus fours short pants, ties, and cropped hair styles.
Volume 2 documents several trips by railroad and steamship, beginning on October 10, 1926 at Pennsylvania Station in New York. The first trip went from New York City to Rochester (New York) on the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Places visited include New York City, Ithaca, and Rochester. On a second trip, the travelers saw the sights in New York City beginning on October 9, 1927, including taking a steamship on the Hudson River. Places visited on subsequent steamship trips include the Thousand Islands, Mount Royal (Montreal, Quebec), other tourist spots in Quebec, Detroit, Mackinac Island, Belle Isle (Detroit, Michigan), Lake Michigan, Chicago, Geneva Lake (Wisconsin), Georgian Bay (Ontario), Parry Sound (Ontario); and on a trip documented at the end of the volume, Oriskany (New York), Utica (New York), and the Women's Prison in Auburn (New York). In addition to photographs and postcards, the volume includes clipped maps with the different travel routes shown in ink or pencil. A few of the Canadian photographs feature First Nation people.
