Scope and content

Collection consists of work of Edmonson including paintings, drawings, preliminary sketches with color notes and other illustrations, also some biographical material, including pages from the Newtonian yearbook and exhibition items. Subjects of the artwork include studies in human figures, anatomy, plants (botany), insects (entomology), fish (ichthyology), oriental sculpture, Japanese and Minoan cultural items, landscapes, tractors, farm barns and others. Specific illustrations of note include one of a boot, possibly a home on Cayuga Lake, a painting on canvas of a male labeled Cornell 1918, and a 24" x 28" Cornell map drawn by Edmonson.

Biographical / Historical

Julia Ellen Edmonson, also known as Ellen Edmonson and Julia Edmonson, enrolled in a graduate program at Cornell in the fall of 1918, studying entomology under James Needham and Fine Arts under Olaf Brauner. She had previously graduated from Newton High School in Kansas in 1914 and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1918. In 1918-1919, she also served as an assistant in Entomology. She returned to Cornell in the fall of 1925 as a non-degree candidate, studying painting and graphic arts for a term with Professor Brauner. She taught art classes at Syracuse University in the 1940s and later at Cornell University.
