Biographical / Historical

Lindsay Cooper (1951-2013) was an English composer and bassoon and oboe player who easily traversed the worlds of free improvisation, jazz, rock, and contemporary composition. A longtime member of the British band Henry Cow (1974-1978), she was also a founding member of the Feminist Improvising Group (1977-1982) and News from Babel (1983-86), and played for many years in Mike Westbrook's big band. As a composer, she wrote soundtracks for several figures in the late 1970s feminist film movement in London, including Sally Potter and Sue Clayton.
