Scope and content

Collection of documents mainly created by Sproull regarding his life. Includes autobiography, oral history interview, curriculum vitae, speeches and publications. Topics include his education experiences at Deep Springs College, Telluride Association, and Cornell University. Work regarding experimental physics and nuclear studies at Princeton, Cornell and Rochester. Copies of talks and papers on various aspects of nuclear and atomic studies, global warming, and education. Copy of a speech given at the dedication of Clark Hall at Cornell. Also talks given at various clubs, Fortnightly, Pundit, Chatterbox, Torch, as well as tributes and memorials to others, including Hans Bethe.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Sproull was a member of the Cornell University Class of 1940. He received an AB in 1940 and a PhD in 1943 in physics. Hans Bethe served on his graduate committee. He served at Cornell as a physics professor and became the Director of the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics and the Materials Science Center. Sproull was also the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Cornell. He left Cornell to take the position of director of ARPA and later Vice President and Provost at the University of Rochester.
