Scope and content

Included are letters from James O. Griffin and H. B. Hutchins pertaining to Hughes' appointment to the faculty of the Cornell Law School, 1891; his own letter, June 9, 1891 to Cornell President Charles Kendall Adams accepting the appointment; President Jacob Gould Schurman's letter, January 3, 1893, accepting Hughes' resignation; Schurman's letter, Nov. 9, 1916, commending Hughes on the ever of his defeat in the presidential elections of 1916; Schurman's letter, Feb. 14, 1930, congratulating Hughes on his appointment as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court; copies of Hughes' message to Dean Charles K. Burdick on the occasion of the dedication of the Law School building, Myron Taylor Hall, 1932; and a typed copy of Hughes' reminiscences of his earlier connections with Cornell, 1940. Also includes certificate and pen related to the signing of Assembly Bill No. 2168 "An Act Providing for the development and extension of the State College of Agriculture at Cornell University," June 1910 (mu-514).
