Scope and content
Newspaper clippings and magazine articles by or about White. The collection consists mainly of obituaries and biographical sketches, but also includes an article by White, "The substitution of electricity for steam as a motive power," that was published by the American Society of Civil Engineers for the International Engineering Congress of 1904.

Biographical / Historical
Born in 1861, White graduated from Pennsylvania State College in 1882, received his M.A. in physics there in 1884, and completed his Ph.D. in engineering at Cornell University in 1885. He founded the Western Engineering Company with two associates, and rose to prominence as a pioneer of electric railways. He then founded the firm J.G. White and Company, and worked on engineering projects around the world. Besides his very active career, White also played a prominent role in the Boys' Clubs of America, and served as a trustee of Pennsylvania State College. He died in 1942.
